The sword 1980

The sword 1980

Adam Cheng plays Li Mu ran, a young swordsman who has trained for ten years in order to find the greatest swordsman he has heard of, Hua (played by Tien Feng) and see how good he is.

During his journey, he meets and saves a young girl called Ying Chi from a professional killer and they become friends and decide to travel together. They meet Xiao Yu, Li Mu Ran's childhood love, who is now married to Lin Wan (played by Norman Tsui), who beats her when he sees that she still loves Li Mu Ran. Lin Wan sends his assassin Eddy Ko Hung to kill Li Mu Ran and this latter is badly hurt. He is saved by a woman called Yen Chi, who is a friend of Hua.

When she learns that Hua's daughter has been kidnapped, she asks Li Mu Ran to save her and when Li discovers that he must save Hua's daughter, he agrees in order to finally meet the myth he is after since so long.
He saves the daughter and discovers that she is nobody else than Ying Chi, who leads him to Hua. When this latter discovers that Yen Chi has given the Chi Wu sword (an evil sword he had been told to get rid of because it's an evil sword) to Li, Hua agrees to fight with him and he is hurt by Li, who discovers that fame doesn't lead to anywhere.

While Hua is recovering at home, Eddy Ko Hung kills him and Ying Chi believes that it's Li who killed her father and she decides to kill him.

When Yen Chi tells him that Hua is dead, Li tells her that it's impossible because he hadn't hurt him that bad and Xiao Yu then discovers that it's her husband who has got the Hon Xing sword and that he also wants to get the Chi Wu sword and she goes to Yen Chi's house in order to tell the truth to Li.

She also tells the truth to Ying Chi, but this latter doesn't believe her and it's only when Li fights again with Ko Hung and kills him that this latter tells the truth before dying that she finally discovers that Li has nothing to do with her father's death, and Ying Chi and Li Mu Ran goes to Lin Wan's house in order to fight him and save Xiao Yu, but this one has already been killed by her husband and there is a final great fight between the two men.

When I first watched this movie when it was released in VHS format, I had found it very slow and very violent and I wasn't so interested in it.

Many years later, I just watched it today and it appears that actually, it's a superb movie, with very good fights and a good but so sad story.

Ko Hung is very good as the ninja look alike killer ; Tien Feng is convincing as the retired swordsman who relies on fate regarding the fact that he might be killed by his own Chi Wu sword ; Norman Tsui is the villain and Adam Cheng is superb and very convincing too in his role.

If you haven't watched this one as yet or watched it a long time ago, don't miss it, it's worth spending 1h30 of your time !!

I watched the movie in Mandarin and I noticed that it seems that it isn't Adam Cheng who sings the song in Mandarin, while it's him who sings it in Cantonese. Am I right or is it that I didn't recognize his voice in Mandarin (and if it's the case, shame on me !! ) ?
